Taking Your Pet's Temperature
Normal Temperature Ranges
Dogs: 37.5–39.1°C (100–102.5°F)
Cats: 38.1–39.2°C (100.5–102.5°F)
Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Use a digital rectal thermometer with petroleum jelly lubricant
  1. Have someone gently restrain your pet
  1. Insert thermometer gently about 2.5cm into rectum
  1. Wait for digital beep, then record reading
Warning Signs
  • Fever above 39.5°C requires immediate veterinary attention
  • Hypothermia below 37°C indicates serious concern
  • Shivering, lethargy, or excessive panting

Checking Heart Rate and Pulse

Locate the Pulse Point
Place two fingers on the inner thigh where the leg meets the body (femoral artery) or on the left chest wall behind the front leg. Avoid using your thumb as it has its own pulse.

Count the Beats
Count heartbeats for 15 seconds, then multiply by four to get beats per minute. Ensure your pet is calm and resting for most accurate readings.

Record and Compare
Document the rate and rhythm. Note any irregularities, skipped beats, or rates outside normal ranges for immediate veterinary consultation.

Monitoring Respiratory Rate

Observation Technique
Watch your pet's chest rise and fall whilst they're relaxed or sleeping. Count for 30 seconds and multiply by two for the per-minute rate. Avoid counting whilst they're active or excited.

Assessing Hydration Status

Skin Turgor Test
Gently lift the skin between your pet's shoulder blades and release immediately. Properly hydrated skin should snap back into place within 1-2 seconds.

Check for moist, pink gums rather than dry or sticky ones. Observe your pet's energy levels and appetite, as dehydrated animals often become lethargic.

Skin that remains tented, sunken eyes, dry nose, decreased urination, and loss of appetite all suggest dehydration requiring immediate veterinary attention.
Mild Dehydration
Skin snaps back in 2-3 seconds. Increase water availability and monitor closely. Contact vet if no improvement within 24 hours.
Moderate Dehydration
Skin takes 3-5 seconds to return. Requires immediate veterinary assessment and likely fluid therapy for safe recovery.
Severe Dehydration
Skin remains tented beyond 5 seconds. This constitutes a veterinary emergency requiring immediate professional intervention.
Examining Gums and Capillary Refill
Healthy Gum Characteristics
  • Pink, salmon-coloured appearance
  • Moist, smooth texture
  • No swelling or bleeding
  • Fresh breath without strong odours
Capillary Refill Test
Gently lift your pet's lip and press firmly on the gums with your finger. Release and observe how quickly the pink colour returns. Normal refill time is less than 2 seconds.
Pale Gums
White or very light pink gums may indicate shock, severe anaemia, or blood loss. Requires immediate emergency veterinary care.
Blue or Purple Gums
Bluish discolouration suggests oxygen deprivation or heart problems. This constitutes a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate attention.
Yellow Gums
Yellowish tinge indicates possible liver disease or jaundice. Schedule urgent veterinary consultation for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Red or Inflamed Gums
Bright red, swollen gums suggest dental disease or infection. Arrange veterinary examination for oral health assessment.
